Designing in Complex Systems

Catalog description
What if the challenges we face are just visible signs of deeper, hidden systems; how might we uncover and understand them? Designing in Complex Systems introduces students to the principles, tools, and practices of systems thinking and systemic design for navigating complexity. Using contextual inquiry and frameworks such as causal loop diagrams, system mapping, iceberg model (CLA) and transition design, students will analyze interconnected systems, reveal hidden patterns, and identify leverage points. Through hands-on activities, collaborative exercises, and semester-long projects, they will design interventions that address real-world challenges while considering unintended consequences and emergent behaviors. By course end, students will generate actionable system insights and prototypes, cultivating a holistic, anticipatory mindset for shaping desirable futures.
