International Law and International Relations

Catalog description

The subject will introduce students to international law's role in global political life in a world system shaped by colonialism and its afterlives. It will examine how the international legal order intersects with and is constituted by that history through a study of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) . In addition to key scholars analyzing this legal landscape, we will read and discuss key cases adjudicated at the ICJ, including cases on the right to self-determination, cases on war crimes and genocide and cases on existential threats of planetary scope such as nuclear weapons and climate change.
