In this workshop, we will investigate the New York area as Native ground. Together we will look at the Lenape, Munsee, Shinnecock, Mahican, and other Indigenous peoples of this region, with an emphasis on the years prior to 1800. We will use documents, artifacts, and studies of place to make sense of the history of this region from a Native perspective. We will study contact, colonization, and violent dispossession, as well as survival, endurance, and the continuous presence of Native peoples and communities down to today.
