This survey lecture course provides an introduction to the history of modern South Asia from the decline of the Mughal Empire, through the rise of British power, and into the age of nationalism, decolonization, and the formation of independent nation-states. It examines the forms of political 5 institutions and economic configurations that have shaped the trajectories of South Asian lives over three centuries. It attempts to understand both internal dynamics of South Asian societies, and the larger configurations of forces by which South Asia has been affected. It introduces students to the geography of South Asia, its diversity, its conflicts, and its layered structures of power and inequality.
