Catalog description

This course will use Jewish graphic narratives as an entry point for broader discussions about global Jewish culture. On the one hand we will pay significant attention to the particularities and affordances of the graphic medium from its inception as comics to its contemporary iteration as graphic narratives. On the other hand, we’ll cover wide-ranging thematic facets such as grief, queerness, gender, assimilation, translation, immigration, love, the Holocaust and Holocaust memory, Israel, Europe, the US and more. Authors will include but are not limited to Amy Kurzweil, Leela Corman, Julia Alekseyeva, Tyler Feder, Sol Brager, Liana Finck, Art Spiegelman, Rutu Modan, and others.
