The Technopolitics of Global Affairs is a critical examination of the intersection between technology—defined as the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes—and politics, or the determination of "who gets what, when, and how". This course moves beyond viewing technology simply as a tool, instead investigating it as both a driver and a result of global social interactions. Students will explore the dual nature of technology: its potential to amplify ideas, facilitate commerce, and ensure security, balanced against its role as a means of surveillance, control, and inherent bias. It explores important questions, such as what exactly is being ‘secured’ when we undertake cybersecurity? Through this lens, the course seeks to answer whether technology is our master or our tool, and how it fundamentally reshapes International Relations, Global Security, Conflict, and Cybercrime.
