Cyber Ethics

Catalog description

Cyber ethics is an organized way of thinking about systems, and how ethical principles influence the relationships between people, technology, and data. Students will gain a rich understanding of how systems thinking in engineering, and the Systems Decision Process (SDP), can be applied in tandem with ethics-based analyses to address large-scale multi-disciplinary problems involving advanced technologies. Lectures and discussion will prepare students to discuss analytical and policy responses for addressing elements of these “system-of systems” issues. Students will examine competing philosophical schools of thought on morality, ethics in decision-making and data science, and the four different types of ethical dilemma paradigms: (1) justice versus mercy; (2) short-term versus long-term gains; (3) individual interests versus community interests; and (4) truth versus loyalty. Together, we will focus on defining advanced technologies, and understanding its impact. Additionally, we will untangle what it means to be an ethical leader and identify the ethical considerations that encapsulate every ecosystem.
