Catalog description

This course surveys computerized simulation methods and introduces practical application of these methods in realistic scenarios (e.g., analysis of clinical trials) using R. We will learn how to design and conduct simulation studies in complex settings (e.g., clinical trials with multiple interim analyses and adaptation) that are otherwise difficult to analyze. For example, theoretical analysis of a complex clinical trial, such as for new vaccines, is very challenging, whereas an investigation via simulations is simpler to implement. Our emphasis is on the introduction of practical algorithms. Yet, the theories behind the probabilistic models and algorithms are explained in class from first principles. One of the goals of the course is for the students to design and implement a simulation study in a biostatistical context of their own interest.
