Catalog description

This intensive online seminar will serve as a laboratory to learn about Participatory Action Research (PAR) – a decades-old approach that is enjoying a renaissance among Global Affairs practitioners who are seeking to take practical steps toward localization. Students in the course learn the principles of PAR, how it can be carried out and its limitations. Each participating NYU student will work with partners to design a PAR project that will be carried out in that partner's country. During the seminar, research teams will investigate and utilize participatory research design processes. Students will explore primary and secondary source data generation and data analysis, and both quantitative and qualitative methods including, but not limited to, surveys, interviews and observations. The course will be taught in a workshop style with significant opportunities for students to practice and apply PAR techniques.
