Explore the rich history and artistry of Chinese gardens, from their origins to contemporary interpretations. This course delves into the evolution of garden design in China, emphasizing the cultural and aesthetic principles that shaped these landscapes. Through lectures, readings, field trips, and hands-on projects, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of Chinese gardens' significance and impact. Topics include early garden traditions, political symbolism and power dynamics in imperial and private gardens, and the influence of Chinese garden design on global landscapes. Additionally, this course will discuss how Chinese gardens relate to other forms of Chinese art, including painting, literature, and religious art. Students will explore how cultural contexts shaped these gardens and how their principles inspired garden designs worldwide.
