Approaches to French History (in French)

This course is an exploration of the forces, ideas, and tensions that have shaped France and the French-speaking world across time. The course examines pivotal moments and developments in the history of France through a range of historical lenses, allowing for varied points of emphasis. Students will analyze the dynamic interrelations between history, literature, society, fine arts, and philosophy, considering how cultural production can both reflect and influence historical change. Students will engage directly with historical texts and scholarly interpretations to develop critical perspectives on the past and better understand its repercussions and reinterpretations in the present. Students will examine major intellectual movements, social transformations, political conflicts, and the relationships between state, nation, and citizenry, all of which have played a role in defining French and Francophone identities and experiences, as they refine their skills in analysis, discussion, and oral and written presentation
