This course focuses on the history of Italian cinema and its particular approach to production and directing. This is cinema that gave the world several masterpieces, and still pursues an independent path that is strikingly different from the Hollywood mainstream. We will focus on the neo-realism period and then of the major films of the great maestros, Fellini, Rossellini, Pasolini and Visconti. The three principal areas of investigation are the narrative structure and directorial style of the films; issues of adaptation from novel to film; and the political, historical, social and cultural relations relevant to the films. Screenings, readings and papers will be required. This course allocates as History & Criticism for Film & TV majors. COURSE SUBJECT TO DEPARTMENTAL FEES.
