Catalog description
This course provides an introduction to variable density gas dynamics, starting with the conservation equations for inviscid flows, and develops relations for one-dimensional flow properties, including isentropic flows, normal shock waves, 1-D flows with heat addition, oblique shock waves, Prandtl-Meyer expansion waves, flow over wedges and cones, flow in nozzles and diffusers, and flow in converging-diverging nozzles. The course will also introduce the applications of compressible flows in wind tunnels, shock tubes, within engines, and over wings. The course will end with brief introductions to the advanced topics such as unsteady wave motion, the theory of linearized flows, transonic flows, hypersonic flows, and high-temperature flows.
