Introduction to Environmental Toxicology

What does it really mean to “Detox?” This course explores how chemicals and environmental exposures interact with human systems at the cell, tissue and organ system level, to reveal how those interactions can lead to harmful health outcomes. Students will build a strong foundation in understanding the movement of toxicants through the body (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) and the principles of toxicokinetics, while examining the molecular and cellular mechanisms that drive toxic and disease effects. The course connects classical toxicology with modern molecular approaches, examining tools used to detect DNA damage and to analyze genomic and epigenomic responses to chemical exposure. Both human-made and naturally occurring environmental toxicants and mixtures are considered, highlighting the diversity of substances that can impact human and environmental health. Emphasis is placed on translating toxicological science into practice through clinical perspectives on exposure and poisoning, as well as solidifying the scientific framework used to evaluate hazards and assess risk. The course also addresses how toxicological evidence informs regulation, policy decisions, and risk communication with the public. By integrating mechanistic science with real-world applications and emerging environmental challenges, the course prepares students to critically evaluate toxicological data and apply risk-based thinking to protect public health and the environment.
