Catalog description

This course will provide a comprehensive overview of modern technologies for power distribution system operation and planning to allow the integration of distributed energy resources such as solar PVs, electric vehicles, battery storage, heat pumps, and fuel cells. Students will be exposed to the challenges of modern power distribution introduced by distributed energy resources, and the system-level analytical tools to address such challenges in an automated fashion. The course will also cover the standards and processes of the integration of distributed energy resources into the grid, as well as their optimization to achieve efficiency, reliability, and sustainability goals. The course will introduce the points of intersection between electric power and several other fast-developing areas, including artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, edge computing, and cybersecurity. Students will be prepared to embrace the opportunities in this vibrant area via an interactive learning process with technology survey, presentation and discussions, and open-ended projects. In order to take this course, students need to either have taken a course on power flow modeling and analysis in their prior studies or take ECE-GY 5613 simultaneously.
