Crossroads of Liberation: Decolonial Praxis in Ghana

This intensive two-week course explores liberatory theory and action through a praxis-oriented, decolonial lens. The course will take place in Accra, Ghana. Drawing from the works of Kwame Nkrumah, Paulo Freire, bell hooks, Frantz Fanon, and other global liberation thinkers. Students will critically examine how liberatory practices emerge in response to systems of oppression and how they are uniquely shaped by local histories and struggles. Through a combination of seminar discussions, community-based service learning, and immersive field experiences, participants will engage directly with Ghanaian organizations, activists, and cultural leaders who are advancing justice, equity, and restorative practices in their communities. Students will reflect on their positionality as global learners and practitioners, considering the intersections of colonial history, contemporary social justice movements, and transnational solidarity. By weaving theory and practice, this course will cultivate skills in critical reflection, restorative and liberatory praxis, and cross-cultural collaboration. The experience is designed to deepen students’ understanding of how liberation work transcends borders and how they can embody liberatory values in their personal, academic, and professional lives.
