Catalog description

The primary objective of this capstone experience is to support students in the development and completion of original research in their targeted areas of interest based on primary sources. Each student will write a research essay while in conversation with peers and under the instructor's direct guidance. This course is designed to acquaint students with theoretical and methodological approaches to scholarly production in drama, theatre, and performance as well as familiarize students with the wealth of library resources, archives, and collections available to them at NYU and beyond. While all students will complete a research essay, students also have the option to complete hybrid projects that include either a research essay with a creative component, a research essay with an archival component, or a research essay with community practice component. This syllabus is largely shaped around the needs of the student research proposals submitted in advance of registration for this course. Each student’s project will be developed, drafted, revised, and workshopped throughout the duration of the course. In the final week of the semester, this course will host a public symposium where projects are presented.
