Physical Theater

Catalog description

This course seeks to develop a disciplined and embodied actor who understands the language of the body and regards the space of the stage as a dynamic, poetic realm. Designed for dancers, this course will introduce principles of physical theater through the exploration of the techniques of the genre's major theorists, with a focus on integrating masks, props, puppetry, and spoken text with movement. This workshop-based class involves physical training and experimentation through students' consistent creation of short, original performance works, both individually and in groups. Students are also required to attend two, live theater-based performances at NYU Skirball Center and to participate in class discussions about the work. Performances may range from opera to performance art.
