Child and Adolescent Emergency Psychiatry Introductory

This is a 2-week elective that seeks to introduce students to the field of psychiatry, through the child and adolescent psychiatry emergency psychiatry service. Students will be rotating in the Bellevue C-CPEP, a clinical program that provides immediate psychiatric evaluation and treatment to all children and adolescents (aged 17 and under) who present to Bellevue Hospital’s Pediatric Emergency Service (PES). In addition, the program also provides ongoing outpatient psychiatric care in the short term Interim Crisis Clinic for patients discharged following their psychiatric assessments not in need of inpatient hospitalization. Students will gain increased knowledge of psychopathology, psychiatric diagnosis, psychiatric emergencies, and psychotherapeutics that are unique to the child and adolescent population, and become familiarized with community resources geared for youths in the New York City area. Students will have an opportunity to participate in care of youths and families with close supervision from child psychiatry fellows and attendings. Students will join the PGY-2 didactics on Thursdays in Manhattan, and Psychiatric and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Grand Rounds. Elective objectives are outlined below.
