Performing Anatomy: Body Technology
New York University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This is a weekly studio movement/performance course that focuses on the body and its anatomy in time and space, to expand the knowledge of interdisciplinary artists working in theater, dance, performance art, film, animation, and the visual arts. This course zooms in on the anatomy of our bodies as a central and essential kinetic tool to the creative process for artists devising work for live performance, for the camera, and for visual and computer generated arts. Students will be introduced to functional anatomy through the exploration of movement and the myriad of physical connections structured and produced by our bones, muscles, tendons, flesh, skin and organs. Through weekly movement exercises, readings and class discussions, we will investigate how our anatomy interacts with forces like gravity, bodily coordination, and breath. Our weekly movement explorations will be supported by guest lectures and workshops in multidisciplinary performance practices. Throughout the course, students will produce original creative works that primarily employ anatomy as an artistic inspiration that triggers the creative process. This course is designed for all students interested in deepening their exploration of ways the human body serves as the foundational and ultimate paradigm for all types of expression, live and virtual.
