Catalog description

Material Time introduces a wide range of material approaches drawn from contemporary studio and performance artists' practices. We'll use a variety of techniques and tools to work with both hard and soft materials such as sticks, wood, paper, cardboard, bamboo, glue, clay, fabric, papier-mâché, rubbish, hardware, and a whole arsenal of found odds and ends to expand our notions of what we can unlock with sculptural and performative gestures. Through sculptural experiments with building, assembling, moving, collaging, and arranging, students will gain experience with a variety of conceptual and practical techniques and processes. Working in two sections dedicated to topics such as scale, structure, shapes, balance, weight, and time, we will explore 3D making to develop spatial awareness, compositional fluency, and problem-solving skills. Material Time is structured into two seven-week sections, each led by a different instructor. Each section will culminate in a group show and presentation, bringing together students from both sections and shared with the Collaborative Arts community.
