Honors in Periodontics and Implant Dentistry

Catalog description

This clinical and didactic program is designed to give students an opportunity to improve their diagnostic, treatment planning and therapeutic skills utilizing evidence-based literature. Through our evidence-based discussions, we will refine the student's ability to formulate a periodontal diagnosis, identify etiology, limit progression, determine prognosis, devise a treatment plan, and expand the student's knowledge base of current non-surgical and surgical therapies. The clinical aspect will introduce the students to periodontal surgical techniques under close supervision by performing atruamatic extractions with socket preservation, crown lengthening, and distal wedge and implant therapy. Towards the end of the academic year, perio / implant honors students who show thorough understanding of periodontal and implant surgery may be given the opportunity to place dental implants and perform certain periodontal procedures. This course is open only to students in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program. Elective.
