Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain Clinic

Catalog description

The D4 student will be exposed to the treatment and management of oral mucosal disease and related oral pathologies as well as that of chronic orofacial pain within the head and neck complex. This course will provide students with a transition from their didactic courses in Oral Pathology and Orofacial Pain into a clinical setting where they can apply their knowledge to patient care. During the clinic sessions students will work in teams to evaluate patients by completing a thorough history and physical exam. They will be able to create a differential diagnosis, review diagnostic radiographic and laboratory data, list treatment plan options and evaluate follow up patients for monitoring disease progression. Students will also engage in didactic learning through case presentations and journal article reviews as well as an in-depth discussion on the diagnosis and management of oral mucosal diseases and orofacial pain disorders. Students will learn the process of a comprehensive evaluation of a patient from their chief complaint up through diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to the head and neck complex. This course is open only to students in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program. Core curriculum.
