Catalog description

CHIN-SHU 421 is the introductory course in a two-part series tailored for both non-heritage and heritage learners who are continuing from Advanced Chinese. This course advances students’ proficiency in the Chinese language and deepens their understanding of contemporary Chinese society. In this initial part, students will engage with a variety of authentic materials, including newspaper articles, scholarly essays, and multimedia resources. They will explore major societal themes such as education, gender issues, family dynamics, and new economic trends in China. This immersive approach aims to refine students’ formal written and spoken Chinese, setting a strong foundation for specialized post-advanced studies. Credits earned can apply toward the Chinese minor at NYU Shanghai. Prerequisite: CHIN-SHU 302 , CHIN-SHU 301A , or with the instructor’s permission. Fulfillment: GCS major advanced track Language requirement for Non-Native Chinese Speakers; Chinese minor.
