Microbiology & Biological Treatment Processes

Catalog description

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of microbiology that are pertinent to environmental engineering and biological treatment processes. The course begins with an overview of microbial diversity and classification, cell structure, microbial metabolism and microbial genetics. Focus is then applied to biological treatment processes in the context of water and wastewater treatment including suspended growth, activated sludge, biological nutrient removal and biofilms. Additional topics pertinent to environmental engineering science will be discussed including pathogens; disease and immunity; environmental influences on microorganisms; roles of microbes in biochemical cycles and bioremediation, bioenergy, molecular microbiology, and microbial ecology.
