Chemistry of Food and Drugs

Catalog description
This course introduces students to the language of chemistry in the context of food and nutrition, medicine and health. Students will explore the science behind food preparation and food safety, and learn about the role of various macromolecules in the body. They will be introduced to core biochemical concepts and learn about the development of some impactful pharmaceutical drugs, and delve into drug discovery- its process, challenges and future outlook. This course integrates laboratory activities to allow students an opportunity to experimentally discover and appreciate the chemistry behind cooking and the drug discovery process. Prerequisite: None. Anti-requisite: BIOL-SHU 21 Foundations of Biology 1 or CHEM-SHU 125 Foundations of Chemistry 1. Fulfillment: Core ED.
