Catalog description

Are smartphones and digital platforms addictive? How does technology manipulate our attention to maximize engagement? Many of us spend more time than we'd like on our digital devices - a habit that is associated with increased risk for depression, anxiety, and loneliness, among other consequences. In this course, we discuss persuasive technology, associated negative consequences, and strategies to reduce excessive use. Specifically, the course covers: 1) the brain mechanisms and behavioral patterns underlying addiction, 2) how brain/behavioral mechanisms are exploited to capture our attention, 3) the emotional, physical, and social consequences of digital device overuse, and 4) how we can regain balance at the personal and societal levels.
