Catalog description

This seminar provides students with an in-depth exposure to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Beginning with epidemiology and etiological theories, we examine various biological, behavioral, and cognitive paradigms in an effort to help students conceptualize the developmental links between brain and behavior. We discuss diagnostic and treatment strategies for ASD and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. The course also highlights specialty topics in ASD, including gender and sexuality, family, and care in pediatric and psychiatric settings. Primary sources include scientific papers and book chapters, individual accounts by people with ASD, and reviews of current popular media. Students also learn about a social skills treatment program for teens and young adults with autism spectrum disorder.
