Catalog description

Being able to analyze and present data visually has become an increasingly important skill for students who want to work in bioinformatics and computational biology fields. Biomedical Visual Analytics teaches you how to design effective interactive visualizations of complex biomedical data (imaging, sequencing, health records, etc.) for data understanding, discovery, and presentation. The course blends knowledge of data processing and analysis with visualization design and development. Two introductory lectures familiarize students with biomedical visualization and visual analytics, integrating automated analytics (AI, etc) with interactive visual interfaces. Students form small groups and are then given scientific papers to study and present to the class. Becoming an expert in their chosen topic, they will then develop a visual analytics approach to analyze a related dataset, leading to a prototypical implementation and presentation in class as well as a written report in the form of a short paper, which may be chosen to submit to a biomedical visualization conference or journal track (optional). The instructor and assigned course assistant(s) will therefore work closely with the students and provide tailored guidance and feedback.
