Photography 1: Framing Reality

We are constantly engaged with photographic images in our contemporary lives, both from a production and a consumption perspective. During this course, we will unpack the various layers of affect hidden within the act of image making with lens based media. In this project-based course students can expect to gain an introduction to photography as an artistic medium through hands-on technical and conceptual experimentation. Students will learn to shoot, edit, and print digital photographs using professional photographic equipment and softwares. Additionally, the course will help students develop critical perspectives by engaging theoretical texts that inform the study of photography as a contemporary artform. During group critiques, students will also learn how to articulate and iterate on conceptual ideas based on peer feedback – by the end of the course, students will have developed a small body of work grounded in critical thought and historical knowledge of contemporary photography.
