Catalog description
This course presents the latest development in the field of teleoperation systems, with special emphasis on haptic teleoperation in space. Teleoperation systems with haptic interfaces allow humans to feel and physically manipulate virtual and remote environments. These systems have applications in many areas, including computer-assisted and simulated surgery, exploration of hazardous or remote environments, micro/nano manipulation, education and entertainment. The course is organized into lectures, readings and discussions on classical and current topics in teleoperation, and a term project. Through the lectures, readings, and discussion, students will learn to think critically about prior work presented in the teleoperation literature as well as their own work. Through the project, students will create/recreate an advanced teleoperation system involving haptic interaction.
