The Neanderthals

Neanderthals are our closest relatives and, since their discovery in 1856, they have engendered endless fascination. Most of us have some notions of what they and their world was like, but new discoveries and lab techniques have changed much of the scientific knowledge. This course introduces the now richly documented archaeological and biological evidence of Neanderthal lives, environments, and culture, following them to their ultimate extinction. Through a series of lectures and seminar discussions of original scientific literature, students will have a chance to acquaint themselves with the data and reflect on the philosophical implications of a different humanity. Recommended (but not required) prerequisite: Introduction to Archaeology ( ANTH-UA 3 ).
