This is a course in the anthropology of carceral studies. We focus on the multiple facets of mass incarceration in the U.S., the magnitude of which reveals what many today see as an American crisis involving increasing militarization, surveillance, policing, racism, and their globalization. Our premise is that the US is a society based on carceral principles and carceral culture, whose various populations and groups are subject to similar (though not identical) practices of containment and control.
