Commercial Driver’s License Training

Catalog description

To get a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) students must be 18 years old and pass a general knowledge test for the class of vehicle they plan to drive. Students will also have to pass written tests for a combination vehicle and air brakes of the vehicle they will be driving is a combination and/or has air brakes. Additional requirements that must be met as a part of the CLP application process include the certification that the student is not subject to disqualification, providing proof of citizenship, and completing the CDL/med card merger process. Section 391.11 of the FMCSR states the student must meet certain requirements to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) including, proof the individual is at least 21 years old, proficient in speaking, reading, and reading the English language, can pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam, are not disqualified to drive a CMV, and successfully pass a road test. Drivers applying for an initial commercial driver’s license (CDL) or drivers upgrading their current CDL are subject to the entry-level driver training requirements in Part 380 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation (FMCSR). Before taking the skills test, an entry-level driver must complete a prescribed program of theory and behind-the-wheel instruction provided by a school or other entity listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA’s) Training Provider Registry (TPR) and pass with a score of at least 80% before advancing to the driving portions of the course
