Math for STEM Educators

Catalog description

This course is a survey of mathematical topics covered in K-12 education that are particularly applicable to STEM fields. The course will develop the necessary background mathematics and indicate how it can be applied in scientific fields, presented in a way that the student will be able to bring these applications directly to their classroom. Selected topics, and their applications, include rates of change (kinematics), vectors and their operations (forces and work), ellipses (planetary orbits), hyperbolas (lenses and telescopes), laws of sines and cosines (civil engineering), polar coordinates (navigation), exponential decay (radioactivity), and modular arithmetic. (cryptography and security of financial transactions)
