Catalog description

Thermodynamic considerations, phase diagrams, and atomic diffusion are reviewed. Principles of crystal interfaces and microstructure are studied, including grain boundaries, interfaces, influence of interfaces and strain energy on microstructure and kinetics. Solidification of single-component and multicomponent systems is discussed with applications to ingots, castings, and welding. Diffusional and diffusionless phase transformations in metals and their alloys are discussed. Knowledge of the core thermodynamic concepts underlying materials behavior, as well as the structure of various engineering materials is required.
