Catalog description

The Smart Materials and Structures course will focus on basic concepts and applications in several types of smart materials and structural systems. First, this class introduces smart materials and structural systems and applications in various fields. Then, it provides theoretical backgrounds of smart materials through modeling mechanical and electrical systems and mathematical representations of smart materials. Second, building upon the basic concepts of smart materials, lectures regarding three representative smart materials (i.e., piezoelectric materials, shape memory alloys, and electroactive polymer materials) are given. Last, state-of-the-art smart materials and structural systems are introduced and discussed in the class.
