Catalog description

Offered on demandAn advanced course on modern computational methods, techniques, and best practices for organization, manipulation, analysis, and plotting data of various origins. The course begins with a brief review of basic tools in python, including data manipulation, input/output, and plotting. This is followed by use of advanced python packages towards Geoscience applications. The course then moves into linux command line tools, version control with github, advanced map making and plotting with the Generic Mapping Toolkit (GMT). Additional topics may include website design, high performance computing, and an overview of available open-source software within the Earth Sciences. Shares lectures and labs with GEOL 5001, GEOP 5001, and GEOC 5001, with additional expectations for graduate credit.
