Catalog description

Prerequisites/Co-requisites: EDUC 3040 or EDUC 3042 or departmental waiver. This course will provide a research-informed knowledge base for teaching reading and applying it by practicing with sample lessons from the text. Instruction begins with an introduction to both English and Spanish language structure and moves through the stages of reading acquisition beginning with early literacy, decoding and word recognition, and through the essential components that lead to fluency and comprehension in literary and informational texts. The structure of an effective reading assessment system designed for the progression of reading and how to create a diagnostic plan from the results will be an integral part of this course.
