Prerequisites/Co-requisites: EDUC 3040 or departmental waiver. This course teaches key strategies to differentiate instruction in reading as a response to the needs of all learners including those differing in experience, readiness, interests, educational experiences, ability, language, culture, gender, and mode of learning. Course competencies reflect the national and state standards for secondary literacy instruction. Explicit reading instruction using research-based methods will provide guidance for education students to practice different instructional techniques for learning experiences that are accessible for the diverse needs of learners which include a Response Through Intervention (RTI), Students with Disabilities (SWD, and English Language Learners (ELL). The emphasis for differentiation will be reading in the secondary classroom in various content areas. Field observations in local classrooms is a key component of this course where students will reflect on student learning and classroom environment in their discipline.
