Prerequisites: BIOL 3041 or BIOL 3043; BIOL 3044, CHEM 3033; or Consent of the Instructor. Normally offered: Even Spring. A survey of the effects of naturally occurring and anthropogenic contaminants and toxic compounds on a range of organismal and ecosystem functions. Historical examples and modern case studies across the breadth of biological diversity (microbes to mammals) are used to better understand human influence on the “chemosphere” and how organisms are challenged by, and have adapted to, changing chemical environments. The history of environmental pollution and modern statistical techniques to evaluate environmental chemical data will also be covered.
