Instrumental Sonatas and Duo Repertoire for Piano

Catalog description

This course provides pianists with an in-depth study of major sonatas and duo repertoire for piano and instruments—including strings, woodwinds, brass, and selected percussion. Emphasis is placed on historical style, interpretive collaboration, rehearsal strategies, and performance practice. In addition, skills for quickly learning new pieces, reducing orchestral reduction effectively, and developing technical and musical refinement skills will be covered. Students will explore key repertoire from the Baroque through Contemporary eras, developing the musical, technical, and interpersonal skills needed to perform as equal partners in recital settings. The course includes score study, listening, class coaching, and ensemble work. Pianists will gain practical experience performing with a variety of instrumentalists and develop fluency in stylistic nuance, balance, articulation, and cueing.
