Vocal Literature for Piano

Catalog description

This course provides pianists with an in-depth exploration of voice literature from the Baroque and Classical periods to contemporary repertoire, with a focus on art song traditions across languages and cultures. Emphasis is placed on the stylistic, historical, and linguistic aspects of major song literature, including German Lieder, French mélodie, English and American art song, and other significant repertoires beyond canon. Through listening, score study, and performance, students will develop the collaborative skills necessary for effective partnership with vocalists, including issues of interpretation, diction, phrasing, and stylistic nuance. Special attention will be given to repertoire selection, transposition, and the pianist’s role in rehearsal and performance. This course is designed to build both knowledge and practical tools for pianists. Basic knowledge of vocal diction is needed to take this course.
