Between the 16th and 19th centuries, much of the region now known as New Mexico was colonized and government as New Mexico was colonized and governed as a Spanish colony and, later, as territories of the Republic of Mexico, United States, and Confederate States. These four centuries witnessed significant changes including the introduction of people, plants, animals, and diseases from Europe, Africa, and Asia; Indigenous responses to colonialism; epidemic diseases, revolutions, and wars; and the genesis of new cultural identities and practices. This class explores this turbulent period through the lens of historical archaeology.
