Advanced Native American Intersections in Museums

Catalog description

This course explores the changing relationships and complex intersections between Native people and museums. We will examine how museum practices of collection and exhibition influence ways in which knowledge is formed and presented, and interrogate the role of museums as crucial sites for discourse around issues of ownership, indigenous knowledge and representation. Case studies revealing shifting meanings of objects, curatorial challenges, the development of tribal museums and repatriation complexities will be used to critically engage with Native responses via art, criticism and legal action.
