Catalog description

This course explores issues in disaster health care and policy and links them to specific disasters in the last 100 years. Major disasters will be explored in detail including the impacts on human health especially for at-risk populations, policy at the time of the disaster, and subsequent changes, and notable impacts of health and the healthcare system and nursing. The evolution of both core competencies and crisis standards of care will be explored along with ethical considerations that have arisen. Finally, the course will explore worker health and safety during a disaster and ways to improve both while ensuring the organization’s capacity for disaster.
