Modern and Contemporary Native Art

Catalog description

This course focuses on a survey of theories, concepts and methods that have shaped the analysis of contemporary Native art. Through a lens of Indigenous visual culture, the course examines how we "read" images as a visual language and what influences our ways of seeing and hearing indigeneity, including aesthetics, ideology, and materials. This course that will provide a thematic introduction to contemporary (1960 to present) history, people, and movements of Native North American Art, specifically the United States and Canada.
