This graduate level seminar explores the ethnic, economic, demographic and geographic variables impacting public health in New Mexico and the Southwest. This course challenges the notion that health outcomes are the sole product of an individual’s choice. Through investigation and weaving together the impacts of social and institutional variables on health behavior, students will understand the social determinants of health and social constructions of disease. Topics include access to health care; local alternatives to medical treatment; cultural definitions of health, illness and death.
