Basic Technical Skills & Patient Assessment

Catalog description
The basic technical skills and patient assessment course will prepare students with the knowledge and skills to assess and plan for anesthetic management of patients. Through small group activities and the use of patient actors, students will learn how to effectively communicate with patients, perform a basic preoperative evaluation, and obtain informed consent. Students will gain knowledge on anesthetic risk assessment, diagnostic testing and the information needed for the formulation of a basic anesthetic care plan. Using lectures and hands-on workshops, students will develop fundamental anesthesia skill techniques. Students will gain the technical skills of cardiac and pulmonary auscultation, and manually obtaining vital signs. Coursework will be completed through lectures, assignments, group activities, and role playing with patient actors.
