Catalog description

Prerequisites: ENGL 101 . Pre or Corequisites: ENGL 102 . This course introduces students to the art and technique of lighting design for theatre. Through a blend of personal research, theory, and hands-on practice, students will develop a trained eye for how light affects us in everyday life, visual art, and live performance. The course includes reading plays, observing light outside of class, studying paintings and photographs, and hands-on practical workshops. Students will learn how to read a play like a lighting designer, and translate their ideas into a functional lighting design by drafting light plots, programming lighting consoles, and working with stage electrics equipment. By the end of the course, students will understand the foundational tools to create dynamic, evocative lighting designs that bring a play’s world to life.
